Tesla Model Y Technical Data – The Tesla Model Y is even cheaper with a new RWD version with a 43,990 RWD 260-mile range, and the specs suggest it has an LFP battery.
Tesla has just introduced the new entry-level version of the Model Y in the United States with a very attractive starting price.
Tesla Model Y Technical Data
The new Tesla Model Y RWD jumps into the lineup in the spot vacated by the recently discontinued Model Y AWD (equipped with 4680 barrel batteries).
Tesla Model Y Review, Colours, For Sale & News In Australia
The base model is priced at $43,990 (including $1,640 and ordering), which after deducting the $700 federal tax credit results in an effective price of $38.00 for the retired Tesla Model Y AWD (4680).
*Tesla adds a $1,390 destination charge (DST) and a $250 order fee to all models ($1,640).
Along with some local government incentives, the new Tesla Model Y RWD can be very affordable, and certainly one of the best value models in the all-electric crossover/SUV segment.
It will be interesting to see if this affects Model 3 sales as it is cheaper than the AWD Longul Drange Model 3 (47, 240 + DST) and more expensive than the RWD Model 3 (40, 240 + DST)
Tesla Model X Vs Tesla Model Y
The new Tesla Model Y RWD has an estimated range (according to the manufacturer) of 260 miles when equipped with the standard 19-inch Gemini wheels, or 242 miles with the optional 20-inch wheels.
That’s slightly less than the outgoing Model Y AWD, which averages 279 miles (269 miles with 20-inch wheels). The difference is 19 miles or 6.8 percent over AWD.
We’re guessing the Tesla Model Y RWD has a different battery than the retired Model Y AWD. The manufacturer does not reveal the details related to the batteries, but we note that it has a maximum charging capacity of 170 kilowatts as the entry level Model 3 RWD, equipped with LFP batteries. The Y AWD model (4680) is able to charge up to 230 kilowatts, while the extended batteries (2170) receive up to 250 kilowatts. This fact, combined with the dimensions, suggests to us that this is the LFP battery (probably 60 kilowatt hours, compared to the unofficial 68 kWh estimated in the Model Y AWD).
Additionally, the Model Y RWD weighs 4,154 pounds (209 pounds less than the AWD or LR AWD versions). A similar difference (172 pounds) is noticeable between the Model 3 RWD and the Model 3 LR AWD (3,862 pounds and 4,034 pounds).
Tesla Model Y: When Is The New Version For 2025 Coming?
The new entry-level Tesla Model Y RWD has a single electric motor in the rear, which is the main reason it has noticeably slower acceleration. It goes from 0 to 60 mph in 6.6 seconds, compared to 5.0 seconds for the retired Model Y AWD. The Model 3 RWD is also noticeably slower than the Model 3 LR (5.8 seconds vs. 4.2 seconds). However, for the average EV driver, this still sounds like an excellent number.
The introduction of the Tesla Model Y RWD brought questions about the AWD version, which is equipped with 4680 cylindrical cells.
Tesla removed, at the same time, the automaker is preparing the launch of the Tesla Cybertruck, which suggests that at least for a while, there may not be enough batteries for both the Model Y AWD and the Cybertruck. However, this move means that there is no Tesla EV with a fixed battery on the market. There may also be other reasons, such as the intention to launch another version of the Model Y 4680 (AWD-long term).
Another question is where the Tesla Model Y RWD will be produced – most likely in California. By the way, the Tesla Model Y RWD in Canada is slightly different and comes directly from China.
2024 Tesla Model Y Juniper: Revolutionizing Electric Suvs With Extended Range And Tech Innovations
Either way, many EV buyers will be very happy with the introduction of the car’s long-awaited RWD version. Tesla previously offered a RWD version a few years ago, but dropped it after Elon Musk criticized its insufficient range of 244 miles (down from the 250 miles, which seems to be the internal goal less than that of Tesla).
